I was getting a bit concerned that our short break in Vienna (leaving 3rd September) would put me behind schedule - panic. So belatedly booked at place at the Kings Head Canter on the 31st (sounds a like a horse race, it wasn't).
First though the Newick 10k on the 30th August. Before driving to Newick, I helped out at the very first Haywards Heath Junior parkrun in Victoria Park. A fantastic event with a great turn-out. All credit to the organisers.
I have run the Newick 10k many times before but this year it was a must-do, as one of my eight Sussex Grand Prix races, a Haywards Heath Harriers club commitment. The race is run in memory of one of the original organisers, Will Page, who was sadly killed in a road accident at a young age. The course is all on country roads with a couple of challenging hills thrown in. I met Susannah on the way round and we had a little chat, as you do, well most don't. The start and finish on the village green give the race a lovely atmosphere and there is no chip timing. Finished in 52.29, quite a bit slower than last year. There were lots of harriers, not all in the pic below:

So next day the Kings Head Canter, a 5k race from the East Sussex village of Chiddingly to East Hoathly , sort of pub to pub. This race was new to me so I left my car at the start. Others were better prepared and parked at the finish in order to enjoy the free pint on offer at, you've guessed it, the Kings Head. I was a sorry sight jogging the three miles back to the start in the pouring rain. I had to ask someone to take this photo and there were no runners around to join me. No medal but a banana as you can see.
The race was good fun, despite the weather, with a really mixed group of runners. Finished in 25.44.
